Formula racing
There are a lot of different kinds of car racing out there and probably the most popular is formula racing. This is racing that is done in cars that were designed specifically for that purpose to a very strict set of rules in order to keep the cars competitive.
Formula racing is what most people think of when they think of a racing car. These are custom built race cars that serve no other purpose. They always have open wheels and in most, but not all cases they have wings on them to increase the down force. The top level of formula racing is formula one which is the most widely watched type of racing in the world. However there are formula cars that compete at all levels right down to entry level club racing. Most of the lower level series were drivers learn the sport are formula racing series.
The reason that this type of racing is known as formula racing is that each formula has a very specific set of rules that the car must be designed to meet. This will include not only the size and weight of the car as well as the engine but in most cases also the layout of the car. For example in formula one not only do the rules limit teams to a 2.4 litre engine but the engine must also be laid out as a V8. There are also rules about the size of the wings and where they can be and what the cars can be made out of.
In most cases the rules that the cars have to comply to in formula racing are very strict. This is done to keep the series competitive. The idea is that it will make sure that all of the cars will be more or less similar in performance. In practice this does not work out all that well and in most cases there will be a small group that dominates. This is largely because even within the strict rules that exist clever designers can come up with all kinds of ways to improve the performance of their cars.
It may not seem like it but formula racing is one of the best ways to get involved in motor sport which is why it is so popular in the world of club racing. At the lower levels a competitive formula car can be much less expensive than a road car which makes it a more cost effective option than other types of racing. More importantly you will be driving a real racing car that was designed specifically for that purpose. Most people find this to be much more enjoyable than driving a road car on a race track. Not only is the performance much higher but it also allows you to fantasize about being a professional racing driver.
