Mary Campbell Women's Missionary Society

Mission Focus

Through the years, the Mary Campbell Missionary Society has been noted for its assistance to the needy, hungry, homeless and sick and shut-in. It has provided food and clothing on a regular basis, and financial and other help in emergencies. It helps with a sack lunch program for the homeless and has given volunteer service as well as monetary contributions to Day Spring Center.

We focus in on nursing homes, senior citizens, women’s health, HIV, scholarship, seasonal greetings and gifts, and on other affiliated groups and their projects.

Preamble

We, the Women's Missionary Society of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, do endeavor to make possible opportunities and resources to meet the changing needs and concerns of people throughout the world, do ordain this society and offer a fellowship so strong, a message so convincing and so enthusiastically contagious, that the Gospel through us will be at work in the world.

A Brief History of the Mary Campbell Missionary Society

As with its church, Bethel, the Missionary Society has been a beacon on the "canal" in downtown Indianapolis for over a century. The church, organized in 1836, has served the community in many ways and the Missionary Society has played an integral part in its history of service, education and culture.

The Society was named for Mrs. Mary Ann Campbell, the wife of Bishop C. Pitt Campbell and its first president was Mrs. Martha Hall. Some of the original members were Mila Sims, Sofia Fleming, Ella Waldan, Louise Granger, L. Garnett, Ada Goins, Adelle Waldon Simms, Frances Stout and Josie Dupee.

In early years, the Alpha Home was regularly supplied with food by the Society. During World War I, groups of members formed a Red Cross Auxiliary and several members devoted many hours of service to the Little Red Door.

The Missionary Benediction

"In the Name of the Triune God, May the Spirit of Christian Missions enter every heart. This we ask in Jesus' Name." Amen.
