Popularity of car racing

There are few sports that are as widely watched as car racing. This comes a surprise to a lot of people who assume that other sports are more popular. However the fact is that car racing has a huge following all around the world and is one of the most watched sports there is.

It may be hard to tell but car racing is one of the most popular sports in the world. The reason that it may be hard to tell this is that there are a wide variety of different types of car racing and some are popular in certain areas while others are not. For example Formula One racing is very popular is very popular in Europe but has only a very small following in the United States. In the US on the other hand NASCAR is the most popular form of racing but it is not widely followed in other countries. Because of this split it is often hard to tell just how popular car racing really is.

One good indicator of just how popular car racing is would be the number of people who show up at the events. In almost every country in the world if you look at the most attended sporting event for the year it will probably be a car race. Admittedly this has a lot to do with the fact that the huge size of the track makes it possible for more people to attend than can for other events but the fact remains that they do attend.

Another good indicator of the popularity of car racing would be the number of people who watch the events on television. The top racing series like formula one and NASCAR draw huge television audiences. Again there are extenuating circumstances like the relatively low number of events compared with other sports which does tend to raise the number of viewers but there is no denying that car racing has a huge following.

While car racing is a hugely popular spectator sport the number of people who actually participate is fairly small. The reason for this is fairly obvious, it is hugely expensive to be a racing driver. That being said the amateur racing scene is a lot bigger than a lot of people realize. Every weekend there are thousands of people who get out on the track and go racing. There are ways to keep the costs down to reasonable level and this has attracted quite a few participants.

There is no doubt that car racing is popular but because of its fractured nature it has been difficult over the years for racing series to remain viable. Tastes change and a series that was popular may find that spectators have lost interest and started watching a different type of racing. This is why racing series, especially at the levels below the top flight, come and go with such regularity.
